I am currently working on my first build and have the lower done so now I am hunting for an upper. Almost everywhere is out of stock of everything.

I did find this one still in stock on CheaperThanDirt.com.

First off is this a good lower? Second. I'm not sure if I will like the 9" hand guard. I was thinking about wanting an 11" or so. How easy would it be to replace the 9" with a longer one if I wanted to? Since it's a free-float hand guard does that make it easier to replace with a longer free float hand guard? Do I have to mess with the gas block, etc?

That's is a great upper. Do not mess with the gas block. Unless you are running a suppressor there is no need to mess with one. And even if you are there still may be no need to change it. The only thing a longer rail will do is give you a longer sight radius for your irons. And yes it is super easy to change out a rail. This rail on this upper you have a link to will fit a Spike's suppressor in it if you go to a longer on. Good luck on your upper. Hope all this helped.

What about Daniel Defense?

I found these two uppers.
Daniel Defense 16 UGR V5 Middy
Daniel Defense 16 UGR V5 LW Middy

After more research it sounds like a mid length gas system is better than a carbine length?

The Spikes 12" Spider Web free float handguard is sweet and will set your gun apart from most ( also comes in a 15" length). It is a little pricey at $295 plus an additional $45 per full length picatinny rail. It comes with a 2.2" & a 4.5" picatinny rail. If you can afford it, there's not another guard on the market that looks near as good.
