BATF has ruled these rounds are considered as 'pistol' rounds, too.
will that change any developments/uses involving them?
it could mean a lot if proposed legislation is passed here in CA.

So far this is only Elite Ammunition saying they were raided. ATF has not published a ruling or opinion on this.
If they did declare those common rifle calibers as pistol ammo, this would make them 21+ to purchase like regular pistol calibers, instead of 18+. And this would apply immediately to all online ammo retailers if they did publish this opinion -- in order for the retailers to play safe and avoid potential trouble.
Another problem is that all sold metal bullets would not be outlawed, and all XM855 would have to leave the market immediately because armor piercing handgun ammunition is illegal for civilian consumption.
So we will have to see what happens and if the ATF makes an announcement. If/when that comes, there will be a big rush on them.
And this was reported as being .223, 6.5, and 6.8.

So I, being 18 can buy a rifle chambered in 5.56/.223 (like I just did) and not buy the ammunition for it? F**ked up!!

That is the likely intention of the ATF, if this is true. But so far Elite Ammunition has not provided any proof this has happened and no other FFL has received an ATF notice declaring these calibers as pistol.
If it happens, it will be fast. Biggest changes will be 21+ to buy ammo, XM855 instantly becomes illegal to own or purchase (ammo that meets ATF "armor piercing pistol ammo" definition cannot be grandfathered), and any other caliber that is sold by a manufacturer in an AR pistol config will fall to the same fate.

all this legislation introduced here in kaliphornia is, mostly, the effort of one legislator in particular, Kevin DeLeon, to redefine armor piercing ammo HERE in California...he blatantly ignores the existing definition(s) given by the BATFE and federal guidlines... so far...he's been beaten back by the courts and the NRA, CGN, CPRA and gun owners here but he's not giving up.
keep in mind...most California legislators are not thinking, rational, persons and California has no right to own firearms in it's constitution.
