Hi all, I'm new to the AR platform and wanted to get everyone's opinions on what they use for lube, and also on what they prefer for cleaning supplies. My only experience at this point is a Remmy 700 using Hoppe's 9 and RemOil, but I've seen a few different brands thrown out for ARs (CLP, SLiP2k, etc) and would appreciate your input.

kind of off the initial topic, but instead of muddying up the forum with new topics:
I'm planning to do a color fill on my lower, and planning on using Testor's acrylic paints; if I were to mess something up, is it safe to use acetone (paint thinner) on the finish, or is that a really bad idea?

Cheapo brake cleaner from Walmart would work best.

I just finished filling mine and paint thinner will do nothing with dried Testors, I used Citristrip which can be used indoors and doesn't have harmful fumes for those like me with heart problems.

Good info, thanks! I also just realized that I'm not using acrylic, but enamel; just putting it out there before I get called on that. Now I just need to get the wife out of the house long enough to get the upper out so I can play with it some more! She told me no more guns, but since I already had the lower and the upper is paid for, I feel like I am not breaking the rules, right? With the Testors paints, did you, by chance, color fill for FDE? If so, did you mix it to get the match just right, or does one of the existing colors match particularly well? I have the Desert Tan or Army Tan or something to that effect and would love to know how well it matches to the Magpul line...

So I did the fill, and though it looks fine, I'm not loving how far off the color match is; any suggestions on what would be closer to the Magpul FDE?

For reference, here's how the Desert Tan comes out

I use Nitro Solvent for cleaning and remoil for lube. I always run 2 patches down my barrel. 1 with nitro solvent, then the chamber brush, and finish with a lightly oiled patch to remove the grime and residual nitro solvent.

I've used Hoppe's 9, Gunzilla, and FrogLube. Of the three, I prefer FrogLube. I find it cleans/lubes like the company says it does and it smells a little like menthol/peppermint. Due to the smell of FrogLube, I can clean firearms inside the house without tick'n anyone off. I was using Gunzilla and thought that was pretty darn good, though FrogLube has been noticeably better than Gunzilla on removing carbon. The main reason for the switch was due to my kids beginning to shoot and learning how to clean a firearm. The MSDS on the FrogLube is clean and cloths with FrogLube on it can be laundered. The MSDS on Gunzilla . . . not so much. I wish the cost of FrogLube was lower, though.

I have recently started using Gun scrubber by birchwood casey and rem oil for a final wipe down. Then a bit of hoppes gun oil on the parts that count. Very light coat. Seems to work excellent.

I am wanting to put together a cleaning kit for my AR.
I'm thinking Bore Snake, non-chlorine brake cleaner, Hoppes, Brush (probably a children's tooth brush), and broken shell extractor. Does that sound like it would cover my bases pretty well?

Some type of pick/scraper, microfiber cloth (other any cloth that won't fall apart on you), and screen protector wipes if you have optics.
