hmmm, that's interesting. I do have a bit of a gap on mine, but it's not that much. I actually had a hard time getting in the space I had to measure the gap between the rod and the block itself. did you remove the spring and bushing from the drive rod prior to checking your clearances? that's the only guess I have right off.

What is the difference between the SAR and the BAR rail ?

The most obvious difference outwardly is the width of the rails. The BAR (Big A$$ Rail) is fairly wide and is made to accommodate a large variety of suppressors. The SAR (Skinny A$$ Rail) is much narrower in profile and has a 1.505" ID IIRC. The mounting systems are also different. The BAR bolts directly to a barrel nut that is installed using a standard USGI wrench while the SAR uses a titanium barrel nut and clamps around it. Both have anti rotation features to maintain rail alignment.

Thanks, good to know the difference now. What about the prices, have they changed or are they still the same as indicated by the first post on this thread?

1. I'm building a 16" mid length. I'm wanting to use a low profile gas block. Maybe yours if I could ever find a pic,,,,lol. Anyway. Can you tell me where the 9" and 10" SAR would land in relationship to the gas block. Ideally, I would like it to just partially cover the gas block. Would the 10" do that, or completely cover it. If it totally covers it, I would rather have the 9". Any pic's would be great.

2. When you say it is friction clamped, could there be a problem down the road with this coming loose.

3. Is the 10" available yet. If not, any real ETA.

4. As far as your gas block goes, I think I might have seen a pic, but not sure it's yours. Does yours have the front top corner bobbed off. Thanks.

1. On a middy, 9" will leave it exposed, while 10" should cover it. Here's the size chart I rely on for getting a sense of size; please note that LaRue's gas block has a collar on the front that makes it look longer than it is. BTW, any particular reason you want it exposed; it is usually covered for a reason: to protect it...

For reference, the 20" is a rifle length, the 18" and 16" are midlengths, and the 12" are carbine lengths. As noted above, there's a reason that they aren't shown with rails that are shorter than the gas system; you're only opening yourself to risk, with no reason.

The 9" rail will completely expose the gas block. The 10" will come out just as far as the front edge of the gas block.

The friction clamp design is very snug even without tightening it. After locking down the clamp it doesn't budge.

I'm not sure on the ship date.

I actually called today. I was told by 2 different people that the 10" would only partially cover the gas block. This is what I would prefer. Can we get a definite answer. If it covers it all the way, I'll get the 9". So I really need to know for sure.

Hmm. Would this be a correct way of looking at it. Does the 9" come exactly to the back of the gas block. If so, I would think the 10" would be exactly 1" longer. Right? So it would really depend on how long the gas block was. If it's only an inch, then it's cover. So the longer the better. I assume there are longer gas block's. Like one's made to cover up were a FSB was. Is this correct at all. Thanks.

I do not believe Spike's has any full length low profile blocks anymore. The micro gas blocks that are stocked now are also pinned to prevent any possible shift to could pinch the gas system and hinder performance - like can happen with clamped or set screwed blocks.

So theoretically, I should be able to use a longer gas block like the Larue witch says it with cover the FSB scar's.

Can you tell me just how much is exposed. And, can I find out how long your micro block is. I think this just might work out like I want. :mrgreen: Thanks so much.

Does anyone know if the flats on the barrel nut have to be oriented horizontally/with the rails on the top or vertically with the side rails to properly install the AA piston kit. Also how much does the shim kit for the SAR rails cost? Looking at this rail for the build I am currently collecting parts for. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the barrel flats must be top and bottom for using a piston like the AA kit. The shim kit is available by phone. Don't remember the price right this minute, but if you search the forum you may find mention of it. Search "sar shim kit".
