Sup Dudes!
I had a SKS back in the day when I lived in Missouri, bought it right when I turned 18! I used to feed it all kinds of cheap ammo. Anyway, gave up all hope on firearms since I moved to CA 8years ago. Well that's until recently when I found out about the bullet button and the Bang for the Bucks from Spikes. Just placed my order for a M4 LE Carbine.

My question is for anyone who's pumped out a few hundred rounds already.....What type of ammo does your Spikes typically like? I'm basically going for recreational use to the range about twice a month. However I'm looking for ammo that gives consistence performance and accuracy that's pretty clean on the internals. I'll be honest with you guys I skipped out on the SKS cleaning alot and always bought that mystery box BS ammo  . I plan on using only name brand stuff on my Spikes! Anyway that's it for now, thanks guys and be safe! :D

What doesn't it like is a shorter list. If you find a factory commercial or military load that it won't eat, let us know. You can go all the way up to 75gr without a problem. Above that you are usually dealing with "match" loads with 80gr rounds and require a match throat barrel.

What do I shoot?

Wolf 55gr 223
Wolf 62gr 223
Federal 55gr 223
Federal 55gr 5.56
Federal 62gr 5.56
PMC 55gr 223
PMC 62gr 5.56
Multi NATO 5.56 Contractors

Basically I go for whatever is cheapest and readily available at the time I'm looking to buy more. Honestly, I buy and shoot mostly Wolf now and have never had a lick of trouble in any Spike's rifle I've owned.

I don't have a spikes rifle, but some spikes gear. I have a Smith & Wesson M&P15 and also shoot Wolf, XM193 and XM855. I honestly like the XM855 the best. Its is very accurate, but has less muzzle flash than the XM193. I am acutally going to try shooting 3 clips of wolf, XM193 and XM855 to see the difference in accuracy.

Some people complain they have problems firing Wolf. Everything from stuck shells to broken ejectors. I have put through about 500 rounds without any problems. I can suggest you break in your rifle with some quality ammo. I put a few hundred rounds of XM193 and Federal .223 before firing the Wolf. Not sure if it matter or not.

That's my 2 cents.

I'll shoot anything I can get my hands on and stock up on the rounds I like the most

One thing I love about the AR-15 rifle is the fact it is one of the most versatile firearms ever made. If you are using a rifle built to military specifications (mil spec) then you should be able to shoot any ammo built to 5.56 NATO specs. I have fired a few thousand rounds of just about every kind of mil spec ammo in my AR and have never had a problem such as stuck cases and so on. I'm thinking most people who have stuck case problems with ammo such as Wolf, is because they do not have a true mil spec chamber. It should be chambered for 5.56 NATO, not .223 Remington, and it should be chrome lined. It could be lined with some of the newer coatings instead. but mil spec would be chrome lined. There are numerous other reasons for a good chamber coating, but that is one of the important ones.

So firing the cheap wolf ammo won't void your ST warranty? I've seen other companies that won't cover their product if you do.

Hmmm... that's the first I heard of that. I know some manuals suggest not shooting steel-case ammo, but I never heard of the voiding the warranty. I don't know how they would tell unless you broke the extractor which is common with the steel cases. Although, I'm sure it's possible for the extractor to break using brass cased ammo.

You can shoot Wolf without anything to worry about.

I haven't heard of that one either.
A broken extractor is common even with brass when you shoot a lot and a large number of rounds in one setting. when the chamber gets dirty, hot and sticky. It's worse in non plated chambers.
Nice thing about an AR, the ejector can be changed out in a few seconds.

Keep it lubed.

Well, I'd post a link to the company, but seeing as how they aren't Spike's, I'd be willing to guess that no one here will care who they are :D

Thanks for the clarification, that's great to hear. That makes Spike's an even better choice!

Yeah, I saw that out of the "other" company as well. Talking to a local FFL and he's suggesting going with that company. Of course, it's what he sells. LOL

As soon as I saw on their website that they'll void the warranty, specifically for Wolf type ammo, I quickly backed away.

I can't say I plan on shooting Wolf, I would love to run brass all the time... But money is money.

I thought the same thing. Why shoot dirt cheap ammo? Once I realized I was launching about 300 rounds each range trip, the Wolf ammo started to look more attractive. I still buy the XM193, but I spend the majority of the time with "THE WOLF."

I remember when xm193 was called the cheap shit at 100$/1000 and snobs bought commercial loads at twice the price.

When Wolf came out I remember it being about the price of xm193, not that way anymore.

Now Wolf is labeled cheap shit and xm193 is considered among the good stuff at a price that is out of proportion with the price increase of those same commercial loads.

Damn near everything but Wolf is a minimum 30c/round. Odd that Wolf is supposedly junk but yet Hornady TAP training ammo is licensed Wolf cloning and it is considered perfectly fine by LE and military.

What type of ammunition is made to prevent over-penetration? If I remember correctly Hornady makes a round that fragments upon impact. Is that true? I carry .357 sig in my sidearm and it's a pretty hot pistol round. I carry 124 gr. Speer gold dots JHPs which are probably the fastest .357 sig rounds. The only time Ive had to shoot, one shot stopped a charging pitbull in its tracks. Is there a similar round in 5.56 or .223? Ideally I want a round that has good stopping power without TOO much over penetration for liability reasons. Sorry if this is an elementary question, but Im a newb to the AR world.

One thing you learn when comparing all the different types of ammo out there is that each brand & model has a test or scenario they are better than the rest at. This us especially true of pistol caliber rounds when barriers or varying target masses come into play.

The same can be said of rifle rounds. Commercial non-hp rounds are lower pressure than military loads and deliver less energy on impact which will lessen the chance of a shot passing completely through a target. You will typically only find steel core rounds in 62gr military loads. This means if you run any size commercial load you are plenty effective against soft targets, but will have increased difficulty against an armored foe.

Keep a mag or two of M855 stowed if you run mostly commercial ammo as your primary round, in case you ever need it. Check your department policy before bringing steel core ammo on patrol though as some places have policies against rounds with high effectiveness.
