Uses a smaller and lighter barrel nut, made of titanium. The rail body has a friction clamp welded to it. The clamp slides over and locks onto the barrel nut with the use of tension screws that go thru the bottom of the clamp.

I do not believe Spike's has any full length low profile blocks anymore. The micro gas blocks that are stocked now are also pinned to prevent any possible shift to could pinch the gas system and hinder performance - like can happen with clamped or set screwed blocks.
Sent from my HTC Evo Man you're up late!  So theoretically, I should be able to use a longer gas block like the Larue witch says it with cover the FSB scar's. Can you tell me just how much is exposed. And, can I find out how long your micro block is. I think this just might work out like I want.  Thanks so much. In case anyone care's, here's a few that I like. I think this is a Larue, but not sure.  This one is a Compass Lake.  I don't know who make's this one.  what kind of barrel is that?

I have a couple of questions regarding this rail. First does it come with the barrel nut wrench or does that have to be purchased separately? Second with regards to installing it using an adams arms piston system and being able to verify proper spacing of the op-rod. Do you have to install the rail first or can it slipped over the gas block after verification of proper spacing?

Wrench is not included. Will need shim kit to time wrench flats on nut to be at 12 and 6. Rail must be installed before AA gas block.

according to VuurwapenBlog, the 12" SAR leaves a large gap behind a standard A2 front sight base on a rifle length. whats the deal?

The 12" models are 12", as advertised. They are not marked rifle length, which varies between 12.25" and 12.75", depending on manufacturer and model.
The only model designed with the intent of users putting them on rifle length gas barrels is the 13.2". It will cover about 1/2 of a micro gas block on rifle length gas, leaving room for reflex suppressors or adjustable gas systems (no, not pistons).

Will the SAR rails work with any gas length? (i.e. assuming I have the proper block size, will a 12" rail work on a carbine length gas system?) I want my next build to be light but I want the longer rail...

Yes, as long as you have a micro gas block to go under, the SAR rail will go over it without a problem.

Just to make sure, the shim kit isn't necessary for a standard direct impingement gas system, right? It's only for the gas piston system?
Does anybody have a pic of the barrel, barrel nut, gas tube and block in place but witht he handguard off? That would clarify a lot of this I think.

Correct. The shim kit is only for aligning the wrench flats in the proper position to allow use of a piston kit.

I am torn between the SAR rail and the Centurion Arms C4 rail. They both look great, strong cost about the same....is there somthing that I'm overlooking in choosing one over the other? This is going on a 11.5" SBR that I'm knee deep into. I'm looking at the 10" version going on over a shaved FSB. Would there still be enough room to mount a suppressor later (much later) or would the 9" be a better choice to do this with. Thanks for the help.

If you are looking to mount an ST or OPS suppressor later, you would be limited to a 9" rail. If you went longer it would require a BAR rail for the larger ID to allow the can to slide under.
Shoot me a PM to remind me to post a photo of my 11.5" upper with 9" SAR that is waiting for the ST can. The ST or OPS can will go back to the front of the FSB, so any rail longer will prevent it from threading onto the mount.
