If you had a choice between upgrading your rifle to Nickel Boron Trigger and BCG, vs Gas Piston Conversion, What would be your choice and why?

It really depends on your use for the weapon, as either upgrade aides in keeping a cleaner/easier to clean weapon. Depending on the Piston System, the added parts could possibly lead to failures and headache, whereas the proven DI system is left unchanged if you just upgrade the BCG.

I've been debating which one to use as an upgrade.

I had this same debate and ended up staying di and going NiB. Theres just no "standard" piston system in the ar world it seems and the kit I focused on mostly (adams arms) I believe just has the rod slamming into the carrier. . . seems like it'd be rough on the upper. I like cleaning my ar anyways, gets me away from the wife

I thought about going to the piston driven system too... But I'm not convinced that it is better (better is subjective). I imagine if it was/is, than it would be the standard. From what I've read carrier tilt is the biggest problem with the piston system. Then again, super-heated carbon-laden gas directly into the operation of the gun.... You can't win either way. My opinion: if Stoner wanted it gas operated, keep it gas operated.

I think the piston AR's I have shot are noticeably cleaner than standard gas AR's. I have shot a couple hundred rounds through my HK and when I clean it, there is hardly and fouling or powder on the BCG. And it takes a LOT of action to heat up the receiver and barrel.

Downside is the weight of the piston AR's. Much heavier...

And they are front heavy. An unbalanced weapon feels heavier to manipulate than a rifle that is actually heavier but balanced. Mechanical advantage. =)

Tell me about it, I am thinking about getting the gas block switched, barrel cut and rethread to 10.4" like the HK416. Should cut back a lot of that front heavy section.

Would Spikes do any custom gunsmithing like that? If not recomedations on who would?

We do not take in customer parts for anything other than warranty work.

We would recommend ADCO for mail off barrel work.

there is no benefit to a drop in piston system. only rifles that are built around a piston system should be considered if you believe in that design. tubes do not clog, carriers (mil spec) do not fail to function due to carbon build up, and the di system does not run that hot. i have pulled my carrier group after 120 rounds of fast fire with bare hands and proved it to a piston advocate.

coatings may help the gritty feel but it really depends on what the trigger was made out of and whether it was polished prior to heat treatment. i'll let y'all know when i get mine if it's an improvement over my colt trigger group.
