sorry if this seems to be a dumb Q but - ya learn by asking - I am a newbie to AR`s -- today I found a steal on some 223/556 ammo (500 rds for 120 bux )but the box states - ONLY FOR USE IN THROATED MATCH GUNS DO NOT BUY THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE ONE
I did not buy it as the person selling it did not know what it meant either but could go back tomorrow if it is able to be used in my standard spike AR 15

Do not attempt to use such ammo in a standard AR-15. It is only for use in match barrels with a throated chamber. This is typical of ammo with bullets higher than 75gr, as it pushes the bullet tip forward, changes the shoulder of the casing, and makes the round dimensions larger than 5.56 NATO spec or .223 SAAMI spec.
Those rounds will not seat properly in an incompatible rifle and attempted firing of them in a standard weapon will be dangerous.

My reloading book mentioned that the 82(?) Grain bullets have a longer OAL, but it only said that you will have an issue with them being too long for the magazine, they didn't say anything about the barrel.

Precision match rifles have throated chambers in their barrels. Most semi-auto rifles, including AR-15's, do not utilize oversized match ammo.
If you were looking to use 80gr match ammo, you'd want a Rem700 or similar with a 20"+ match barrel that is throated 0.003 to 0.005 over and a twist rate of around 1/12.
